INCOSE Western Cape Chapter Meeting
Topic: Systems Engineering on the SKA and MeerKAT projects.
Presenter: Thomas Küsel Thomas presented an overview of the Square
Kilometre Array (SKA) project, South Africa's involvement in the
SKA, and the MeerKAT project. The SKA is an international
mega-science project to build the next generation large radio
telescope, and of which South Africa is one of two finalists to
host the telescope. MeerKAT is a South African funded SKA path
finder project to build a world class radio telescope in the
Karoo by 2013. He touched on key system engineering challenges
and lessons learnt to date on the project.
Thomas has been working at the CSIR as a
radar and electronic receiver systems engineer for 10 years,
also managing the system analysis group and responsible for
technology development in the division of Defence Electronics.
He joined the MeerKAT project in 2005, and has been the lead
system engineer on the project since then.

INCOSE SA Gauteng chapter meeting: Speaker : Gerhard Swart, Optimal Energy
Gerhard Swart studied Electronic Engineering
at the University of Pretoria, completing his degree in 1985.
After working as an Automation Engineer at SA Breweries, he
moved to Denel Kentron where he was involved in various
high-tech development programs. After leaving Kentron in 1996,
he worked as Weapons Systems Engineer on the Rooivalk Helicopter
and Integration Team Leader at the new Hong Kong International
Airport. Moving to Cape Town in 2000, he joined the Southern
African Large Telescope (SALT) team as Systems Engineer. In
2005, after the commissioning of SALT, he formed Optimal Energy
with three colleagues, to develop the Joule Electric Vehicle.
Gerhard is currently the Executive Manager of Systems
Engineering in the company.
Topic : Saving Energy with Joule
The Joule Electric Vehicle is an opportunity
not only to develop South Africa’s first own main-stream car,
but it has the potential of making a significant contribution to
a future with less pollution and energy wastage. To achieve
these objectives, the Joule has to sell and be a commercial
success. This means it must be desirable to potential users, not
only meeting their needs, but also having emotional appeal. The
presentation will introduce attendees to the philosophy behind
the Joule development, discuss technical highlights and share
the excitement surrounding this project.

Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) is used for finding weak links in
designs and processes that cause field failures in products. Emphasis is placed
on environmental and electrical stimulation applied in the design phase in order
to force accelerated design and process maturity. HALT allows earlier (mature)
product introduction and obtains robust design margins.
Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) is used during the production
phase to assure process and design control.
HALT and HASS result in cost savings and reliability improvements that are
orders of magnitude better than those attained using traditional approaches.
Gregg K. Hobbs, Ph.D., P.E., is the originator of and world leader in the
principles of HALT and HASS. He has been a consulting engineer since 1978,
specializing in the fields of stress screening, robust and flaw tolerant design,
dynamic analysis and testing. He has been employed as a consultant by many
leading companies in the aerospace, commercial, military, and industrial fields
and has taught at two major universities as Adjunct Professor (Visiting Full
Professor). He has taught courses on these subjects in the USA, Asia, Canada,
Europe, UK, Africa, South Pacific, Middle East and Mexico.
He has introduced, and continues to introduce, many new concepts, techniques,
and equipment that have been proven by 34 years extensive use on many products.
The methods have resulted in savings of several billions of dollars for his
clients. New techniques introduced in early 1996 have resulted in at least a
ten-fold improvement to these highly effective methods. Rapid HALT, introduced
in 2003, has reduced the time in HALT substantially.
Currently the inventor of 14 patents on accelerated testing equipment (with
several more pending), Dr Hobbs has written many important papers on accelerated
techniques and has introduced a number of new concepts in various technical
fields other than HALT and HASS. His book, Accelerated Reliability Engineering,
HALT & HASS, was published in February 2000.
Dr Hobbs recently established HALT & HASS Systems Corporation, a company
providing state-of-the-art HALT & HASS test equipment.
